Mark Allen triggered concern after going missing during his Saudi semi-final against Luca Brecel.

Allen faced world champion Brecel in the last four of the Riyadh Season World Masters and soon found himself 2-0 down in the best-of-seven clash. Ahead of the third frame, the Northern Irishmen was suddenly nowhere to be seen.

The Eurosport commentators were in the dark as much as anyone. There were even fears Allen had got lost in the arena, which is hosting a big snooker tournament for the first time.

On commentary, Neal Foulds said: “It’s a very long break between frames, for reasons unknown. He’s been gone at least five or six minutes now.”

Fellow commentator Dave Hendon added: “I don’t whether he’s found out there’s a delay and left because of that. I hope he’s okay, obviously. Luca is staying where he is. We’ve been told there might be a 10-minute break. Not sure why, we’ll try and find out.”

The mystery was finally unravelled as Allen eventually returned to the table, with it emerging he had been suffering from a nose bleed. Brecel gave his rival a metaphorical bloody nose, securing a 4-2 win with some of his best snooker since winning his first Crucible crown almost one year ago.

The Bullet will face Ronnie O’Sullivan in the final tonight (Wednesday) after the Rocket defeated an out-of-sorts Judd Trump in their semi. Beaten Allen reckons the party-loving Belgian is genuine contender to retain his crown. He said: “If we can maintain that level of performance, he’s going to be hard to stop.

“There’s a lot of players who will go there fancying their chances. Luca going there as defending champion adds its own pressure, we all know about the Crucible curse.”

The ‘Crucial curse’ is a reference to the fact no first-time winner has ever defended the trophy at the first attempt.
