One-of-a-kind Cristiano Ronaldo trading card set to sell for $1million at London auction

A one-of-a-kind Cristiano Ronaldo trading card is reportedly set to sell for $1million at a London auction this month.

Auction experts Bonhams have said they will put the card up for auction, with bidders able to purchase the trading card via cryptocurrency should they wish.

It comes after cryptocurrency was used as part of Lionel Messi’s move to PSG from Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

PSG confirmed that part of Messi’s signing on bonus was paid to the Argentine in cryptocurrency fan tokens.

Bonhams' head of digital art, Nima Sagharchi, has high hopes for the future of trading cards at auctions.

"The sale of the Ronaldo card is a first for us but, as we expand our activities in the field of NFTs and digital art, it is an area we hope to develop in the future," said Sagharchi.

"Sports trading cards have been valued and collected for over a century, and 2021 is very much the year of the sports card, with physical cards representing LeBron James, Luka Doncic and Tom Brady each already having sold for millions of dollars.

"The Ronaldo card on offer is unique and, as one the greatest players of the modern era, arguably the most desirable card in the game."

But Ronaldo is not the first star to be traded at an NFT auction. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes reportedly sold more than $3m in March.

However, nothing compares to the record amount paid by businessman Rob Gough to secure Baseball legend Mickey Mantle’s physical rookie card.

The 1952 Topps Mantle PSA 9 rookies card went for an astonishing $5.2m in November of last year, eclipsing the $3.9m paid for the one-of-a-kind Mike Trout card.

But for businessman Gough, it was well worth it in his eyes.

"I've always wanted this card," he said to Forbes.

"I've been searching for this 'Holy Grail,' the Mona Lisa of sports cards. I finally got the 9."

While Ronaldo’s trading card is set to sell for much less, increased popularity in such cards will increase their value in the years to come.
