Charles “Charlie Wink” Washington was born on Dec. 22, 1964, in Laurel to Mrs. Ora Washington and the late Mr. John Washington. He was the sixth of 10 children. He was known by everyone as “Charlie” or “Charlie Wink”
He was preceded in death by his grandparents Elmer Washington and Roberta Butler Washington; his father John “Big John” Washington; aunt Mae Jewel Bunch; and sister Linda Washington.
Charlie attended school in the Laurel City School District, and later obtained his GED. He worked at the Walker Memorial Company and Wayne Farms in Laurel. His final place of employment was McNeely Plastic in Laurel, where he served as a warehouse supervisor.
He was a hardworking man who loved his family and loved cooking for everyone. Family barbecue and fish fries were notorious for being hosted at Charlie’s house and Billy Joe was the fish fryer. His famous dishes that blessed all souls that consumed them were collards with cornbread, corn salad, BBQ and chili beans. He had an infectious smile that no one can forget, and would open the door to his home to help anyone. If he loved you he would extend his hand to help you in any way he could. He was known for giving rides to family and friends, and if you rode with him you know he a sign on his dashboard that read “No Seat Belt, No Ride.” He also had a passion for old school vehicles.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed visiting Bok Homa Casino, fishing and riding through his childhood neighborhood, which is the Southside of Laurel. He also enjoyed sitting on his porch daily in the afternoon. Charlie loved for his family, friends and daughters to visit him at his home. Mr. Washington loved his grandkids and enjoyed his Paw Paw duty of giving them rides to school. He was one of many Mama’s boys to Mrs. Ora Washington, Charlie enjoyed visiting his mother daily and bringing her his cooking. Last but not least, Charlie was a celebrity, humanitarian and hero to family and friends. Charlie was declared a hero by former Mayor of Laurel Melvin Mack for his heroic act selfless action of saving his neighbor and friend Mr. John from a blazing house fire that destroyed Mr. John’s home.
He leaves his grateful memories with his siblings Tara Washington, Calvin Washington, Bill Washington (Shelia), Bobby Washington (Helen), Tensie Wheeler, Mark Washington (Mary), James Wright, John Washington (Chante), Teresa Winston and John Washington.
He also leaves precious memories with his daughters Laquita Robinson, Sheniquia Bolton and Takella Washington; and his five grandchildren, Tyshaun Smith, Jamiyah Robinson, Cali Williams, Jaylen Robinson and Sadie Washington.
Charlie departed on Feb. 1, 2024 at his home. The funeral service will be Saturday, Feb. 10, at Calvary Baptist Church, 143 Central Ave. in Laurel at 2 p.m. The repass will be at the Oak Park Alumni Building. The family will have a balloon release at his home at 604 Mississippi Ave. on Thursday, Feb. 8, at 5p.m. Balloons will be provided. If you plan to attend you can park in the empty filled across from his home or the empty lot behind VIC.
